FOOD DRIVE ~ PAWTUCKET BACKPACKERS ~ SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER AWARENESS MONTH With an average poverty level in Pawtucket Schools K-12 of 75% the first week of school, Pawtucket children and families are going hungry. That number is expected to increase as more of students are registered. Pawtucket Backpackers will provide approximately 100 – 130 elementary students in need with snacks and non-perishable food supplements to help abate hunger during the weekend and during school vacations, thus allowing students to arrive at school fortified and ready to learn! During the week of September 22 through September 27th, the Pawtucket Backpackers ask your help in stocking our shelves to begin assisting students in October 2013, through May 2014. We are looking for the following items: Mac & Cheese, Pasta, Pasta Sauces, Soups (canned or dehydrated pkgs), Granola Bars, Applesauce, Fruit cups, single serve cracker packs, canned Tuna and/or Chicken, Chili, Vienna sausages (a favorite of our kids), and/or any other non-perishable food item to help us help our families. Non-perishable, kid friendly foods can be dropped off at: Jenks/JMW School of the Visual and Performing Arts, 350 Division Street (across from McCoy Stadium) Curtis Elementary School, 582 Benefit Street (entrance on Bloodgood St.) Slater Park Administration Office (across from the tennis courts) City Hall, Roosevelt Avenue (main foyer) It is estimated to cost $200 per student to provide weekend and vacation supplements during the school year. With approximately 6,700 limited income families in our schools and numerous homeless students recognized each month, our students and families need your help. The Pawtucket Backpackers, comprised of members of the Pawtucket School Committee; Wellness Sub-committee and Sodexo Food Services, the PSD staff and community members, partnering with the City of Pawtucket, ask for your help. Special thanks to Bristol County Savings Bank for their generous contribution of $5,000 to start our year, and to the grandmother from Lincoln who sent $5.00 because she didn’t want to see kids go hungry, and to every individual and organization in between, you are all appreciated and make helping our students possible!
