FOOD FOR THOUGHT. In recent years society has experienced a greater sense of awareness due to technology that connects us to events and occurrences unlike the past. In a sense, technology has sharpened our ability to perceive, to feel, and to be conscious of events, thoughts, emotions which trigger a cognitive reaction to certain conditions or events. Awareness of a single event can provoke distinctly different cognitive reactions based on how individuals comprehend identify with a particular event. Some can clearly recognize and accept the presence of social issues or facts that are exposed through their awareness. However, there are individuals who fall into a cycle of repression of these issues and facts that ultimately lead to a denial of the problems all together. This typically occurs as a psychological defense mechanism against elements of conscious awareness which diminishes an individual’s overall sense of stability, power and control, as well as, detracts from the individual’s self-image. The existence of repression within our society is very dangerous particularly because is prevents individuals from recognizing the ways in which certain events impact and harm others. A lot of the issues that we see in today’s society leads to the inaccurate perception of others, as well as, causes individuals to acquire incorrect information from the surrounding which facilitates inappropriate responses. Repression distorts and individual’s interpretations of events that occur in the present moment, as well as, their memories from the past. Here in lies a problem that society can hardly afford to ignore or deny. Take a moment to think about the crisis that our society currently face as a consequence of police brutality and the denial by some that the issue really exists. Also consider how differently society can view a video which clearly demonstrates excessively harmful behavior to some people while other views the behavior as justifiable.
