FOODS THAT BURN FAT & FOODS THAT STORE FAT? A new client has just begun a fat loss phase and came to me with the following question: Hey mate, quick question, are there any foods I should avoid to accelerate the fat loss or I can have any food? Answer: There no foods you need to avoid to lose fat. The human body does not recognise food as good or bad, and directly store bad food as fat. Nor does clean/good food necessarily make you burn fat. Our body only recognises energy/calories, and macronutrients/micronutrients. Does this mean you can eat purely junk/processed food to lose weight? No, health and long term compliance is an important factor in any fat loss phase! As a general rule of thumb, aim for 80-90% of your total calories to come from unrefined, wholesome foods, such as vegetables, fruit, meat, nuts and seeds etc. Then you can make up the remainder of your calories according to personal preference, a piece of chocolate etc. Bare in mind, that during a fat loss phase, satiation (feeling full) is important to long term compliance and success. So, I would aim to fill up on plenty vegetables and fruits, as well as other food sources that are high in fiber. A diet that is high in fiber will slow gastric emptying, keeping you fuller for a longer duration. Therefore, try to eat a wide variety nutrient dense (low calorie/high volume) foods such as lettuce, broccoli, zucchini and so forth. Finally, ensure that you enjoy the foods you select, as nobody wants to eat foods they dont enjoy!
