FOR EXPATRIATES OF KUWAIT Dt.19-06-2013 There was a meeting of the Indian community at the Embassy of India yesterday. The meeting was addressed by the Ambassador and two of the Counsellors, and a few matters of concern were discussed. The Ambassador stated that he met the Minister of Interior of Kuwait and had a long chat with him and also put forward all the concerns, fears and apprehensions of the Indian community to seek his help. The Minister had high respect and praise for the Indians and mentioned that the Kuwait Government was very happy with the Indians, because they are sincere, hard working and not involved in any criminal activities. He was eager to help anyone who is faced with harassment or improper treatment during checking. However, he has very categorically stated that there is an operation undertaken to clean Kuwait and get rid of all the illegal residents (irrespective of community), illegal trader, illegal employment, illegal transportation, illegal use of telecommunication VOIP and violators of Kuwaiti traffic laws. He made it very clear that he will not support anyone who is caught guilty of any of the violations and therefore he told the Ambassador of India to advise the community accordingly, and to instruct them to give up all the illegal activities and to strictly abide by the law of the country. And in doing so so, if the people feel that they are being harassed or treated improperly, they are free to leave the country and free themselves. The Minister also stated that he was aware that the Press Media was spreading rumours that Kuwait Government is harassing the residents unnecessarily in order to put pressure on their governments to take up the matter with the Kuwaiti Government. He said he gets all the reports of false publications appearing in the Indian Press media, through the Kuwait Ambassador in India and therefore to be cautious not to publish false news. Some of the illegalities which are being cracked down, as stated by the Counsellor, are: 1 - Those holding Domestic Residence and working in offices other than their sponsor or staying in houses other than those provided by the sponsor are considered illegal. 2 - Driver holding Residence No. 18 is prohibited to drive any other car/vehicle other than that of his company or sponsor. The law does not provide for ownership of his own car and hence if he is found driving his own car it will be considered as illegal. 3 - Those owning a car with valid Drivers Licence must use it for their own transportation and not for transportation of public as a taxi. Family members and/or friends can be accommodated in the car, which will need to be proved. 4 - Sharing accommodation with bachelors/spinsters (other than close relations) is illegal. 5 - Baby-sitting, Day Care, Tuitions, Nurseries, Coaching classes in residential houses is illegal. 6 - Houses Parties are not illegal but the conduct and noisy behaviour of attendees could be considered illegal. 7 - Use of Mobile phones, Laptops, Computers, for the purpose of making calls overseas via VOIP, Skype, etc even on ones personal equipment are considered as illegal. Hence to be avoided. The Embassy Counsellor has set us a special helpline to help Indians against any harassment and improper treatment by checking officials, so please make use of the helpline by making a complaint to them. Also the Ministry of Interior, Operations Department have also offered to help, so do contact them with your genuine concerns for assistance. And please do not indulge into gossipmongering. Get the facts and place them before either the Minister of Interiors, Kuwait or the Embassy of India, is the ardent request made by the Ambassador of India.
