FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Andrea Pennington September 10, 2014 appreferee@hotmail 251-423-2052 MEDIA ADVISORY – LWV-Mobile features Voting Rights Speaker Wednesday, Sept. 17, 11:30-1:00 p.m. Mobile – Home to the case that changed the nature of U.S. oversight over possible voter suppression issues, Alabama also enacted a new voter ID law this year. To help understand how these changes impact voting in the state, LWV-Mobile will feature a voting-rights expert, Assistant U.S. Attorney Holly Wiseman, at its September luncheon. Ms. Wiseman, the civil rights enforcement coordinator of the southern district of Alabama, will also describe the current voting environment in the area. “We recognize voting as one of the most powerful tools of democracy,” said Andrea Pennington, president of the Mobile LWV. “The League of Women Voters is intent on protecting and fighting for the suffrage rights of all eligible Americans, and we are eager to hear what Ms. Wiseman has to say about the current voting climate in Alabama.” The League of Women Voters was born when women finally achieved the right to vote, 94 years ago; equal access to polls for all eligible citizens remains a key issue for the nonpartisan organization. The Mobile LWV voted at its annual meeting to study current voter suppression and dilution issues. With a 30-year legal career, Ms. Wiseman has an impressive background in which her work for the U.S. Justice Department led her to fight not only for voting rights, but also for basic human rights. Her work prosecuting human trafficking cases earned her the first and second highest honors bestowed by the Justice Department. She also served for five years as a U.S. Department of Justice consultant for human trafficking to various countries, including Moldova, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan and Tanzania. Wiseman has tackled political corruption in Alabama and antitrust cases in Texas while working for the Alabama and Texas attorneys general. In 2009, the city of New Orleans hired her to establish an agency to monitor its police department.
