FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1st Vice Chief Kimberly Jonathan asks for the assistance of our Indigenous Nations in passing along the Day Scholar information contained in this media release. DAY SCHOOL students (students who attended but did not live at the schools) have been left out of the Independent Assessment Process implemented from the National Residential School Settlement Agreement. If you attended residential school as a day scholar and wish to be registered in the database, or if you have any question or concerns please contact the Office of 1st Vice Chief Kimberly Jonathan. There is no Day Scholar compensation agreement at this time anywhere in Canada. The FSIN has been directed by the Chiefs in Assembly to explore the best options for Day Scholars in regards to class actions. There are over 5,000 First Nations people that attended residential schools as day scholars registered in a database with the FSIN. The purpose of the FSIN database is to ensure that day scholars are kept informed of options available to them in pursuing legal action so they are not taken advantage of as was the case for many Indian Residential School Survivors. “We have seen the detrimental effects, we live them. We will ensure that the survivors best interests are paramount and that the best options are explored and proposed on behalf of First Nations Day Scholars in Saskatchewan” Says Vice Chief Jonathan, Residential School portfolio holder for the FSIN. Vice Chief Jonathan states, “Class action claims of this type can take years to finalize, this will most likely be no different. There are rumors that other organizations and firms from outside our territories are coming into our communities and having people sign contingency agreements and retainers at immorally high percentages of any possible future claim that may come. These organizations may be providing survivors who have already lived through physical and spiritual trauma with false hope. Our communities and our survivors need to be careful of these organizations and firms as they may find themselves locked into a commitment that will cost them too much of an potential settlement.” If you attended residential school as a day scholar and wish to be registered in the database, or if you have any question or concerns please contact the Office of 1st Vice Chief Kimberly Jonathan.
