FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug. 5, 2013 No. 13-077 ONE FLOOD-RELATED DEATH IN KANSAS; FLOOD DANGERS REMAIN IN THE STATE A death in Kansas over the weekend is being attributed to flood waters from heavy rains in southeast and central parts of the state. Allen County authorities say the individual was found Sunday morning in Iola and appeared to have been inner tubing when it happened. High waters remain a concern throughout portions of central and southeast Kansas. Currently, flood warnings are in effect for rivers and streams in Barton, Bourbon, Butler, Chase, Cherokee, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Geary, Greenwood, Harvey, Labette, Lyon, Montgomery, Neosho, Reno, Rice, Saline, Sedgwick, Sumner and Wilson Counties. Barton, Bourbon, Clay, Cloud, Greenwood, Harvey, McPherson, Reno and Rice Counties issued local disaster declarations. No state assistance was requested. Damage assessments will be conducted as flood waters recede. Shelters for people displaced by flooding in Reno County on Sunday were opened at Trinity United Methodist Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hutchinson. Twelve people were sheltered overnight at Trinity United Methodist and 13 stayed at Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Elmwood Care Facility and Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson were evacuated Sunday because of flood waters in the facilities. Some of the residents are being sheltered at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Facility and others are in the church shelters, where they are expected to remain for at least a week. In Rice County, Cow Creek remains high and is still flooding in areas. South of the city of Lyons, flooding has resulted in K-14 highway remaining closed. Current weather forecasts call for the possibility of severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, flooding, tornadoes, microbursts and large hail throughout the state through the week. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management will continue to monitor weather conditions and coordinate resources if requested. -30-
