FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 19, 2014 Contact: Ashley Jones (909) 645-3853 Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown Challenges Governor Brown, Speaker Atkins, Senate Pro Tem Steinberg and Others to the Ice Bucket Challenge RIALTO – This past weekend, Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that renders patients unable to use their voluntary muscles. Those afflicted with ALS, including 300,000 people in the United States, lose their ability to walk, talk, move and breathe. Assemblymember Brown took the challenge because her husband, Dr. Hardy Brown, was diagnosed with ALS in 2002. “I took the Ice Bucket Challenge because our family has been personally touched by this debilitating disease. On average, patients diagnosed with ALS are given a two to five year lifespan. My husband has been living with this illness for over 10 years.” Over the past summer, the “Ice Bucket Challenge” has gained momentum with Hollywood stars, athletes and every day people posting videos of themselves on social media sites participating in the event. Thereafter, they challenge their friends and family to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100 to the ALS Foundation. Many of them do both. “Now that I’ve completed the challenge, I have urged Governor Jerry Brown, Speaker Toni Atkins, Speaker Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, incoming Speaker Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and my colleagues in the legislature to do the same. With their support, the research to find the cause, treatment and cure to this debilitating disease can continue. I hope they will take me up on this challenge,” concluded Assemblymember Brown.
