The National Museum of the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica will wrap up Chamorro Month with a flourish by bringing to light a collection of rare sacred artifacts from the annals of Guams unique Catholic history, including vestiges from the islands Spanish period. And now is your chance to help keep such objects on display for all to cherish and appreciate by supporting a wine-tasting fundraiser that coincides with the uncovering of the Churchs heirlooms. Led by event Co-Chairs Rosario “Charo” C. Calvo and Geraldine “Geri” C.T. Gutierrez, the host committee welcomes all patrons to the Cathedrals second-floor museum wing overlooking the Plaza de España for Ta Testiguyi i Sagrådu na Finapos-ta, “Witnessing Our Sacred Past: A Toast To The Church”. Attendees will gather at the Cathedral in Hagåtña from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014. Admission is $100. Tickets are available at the Cathedral-Basilica Pastoral Center between the church and Academy of Our Lady of Guam High School on Archbishop Felixberto C. Flores Street — and around the corner at the Cathedral-Basilica Gift Shop by the main entrance to the church. Tickets can be purchased from organizers as well, and deliveries can be arranged. For the first time ever in a curated setting, the museum will unveil the cassock of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores and the sword that martyred him; a Spanish-era stone water well; a subset of articles that were once under the doting care of Monsignor Oscar Calvo; and the large alloy bell that hung in the Cathedrals steeple on the day of Guams 1941 invasion by Imperial Japanese forces. These and other such bygones will comprise the museums main collection. More artifacts will be featured in upcoming museum events. The pastoral fête will feature live music and the silent auctioning of furniture donated by a local family. Organizers also welcome the in-kind sponsorship of food, beverages, and technical assistance for the event.
