FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Darlene Rogers Johnson Hall (518) 762 – 8712 [email protected] Anniversary Lecture Series Continues at Johnson Hall (Johnstown, NY, June 19, 2013)……Johnson Hall State Historic Site’s 250th Anniversary Lecture Series, marking the building of the historic Johnson Hall estate, continues on Saturday, July 6. Through October, on the first Saturday of each month, lectures that focus on the period surrounding the 1763 building of the home will be held in the first floor hall of the Johnson Hall, beginning at 11am. Refreshments will be available following each lecture in the Stonehouse. Regular public tours will be available after 1:00pm on these days. On Saturday, July 6, Walter Wheeler will present “This Day I agreed with Mr. Samuel Fuller: Building Johnson Hall”. Wheeler will detail construction practices of the mid-18th century with particular focus on the construction of Johnson Hall and on its builder, Samuel Fuller. Johnson Hall will be contextualized through an examination of vernacular and high style dwellings of the period. Contemporary documents, including Fuller’s account book for construction of the house, will be presented. Wheeler has thirty years of experience in the architectural field, beginning with a position at the Office of the State Architect in Albany. He then began consulting as an architect and architectural historian. He is presently Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates, having joined that firm in 1999. Wheeler has authored numerous scholarly articles and two monographs on New York State architecture, and is currently working on a book which will document the vernacular architecture of the upper Hudson and lower Mohawk Valleys. He is currently president of Hudson Valley Vernacular Architecture, as well as editor of the Dutch Barn Preservation Society’s Newsletter, and serves on the boards of several other preservation-related groups in the region. Additional lectures will include: Saturday, August 3 - “Archeaology at Johnson Hall” presented by Lois Feister-Huey.
