Starting in April, those seminars will take place in different community centers within the Houston area. Becoming One Community believes that empowerment of ex-offenders will lead to positive contributors. “Being in this type of similar situation myself a few years ago, I definitely understand the ups and downs of reintroducing yourself back into society” according to James E Davis Jr, Executive Director and Founder of Becoming One Community. “After speaking with many ex offenders and their families, I have discovered that there is definitely a need for such a program. I know there are many programs that may be similar to this particular one; however there are not enough programs to address the needs of so many individuals. Therefore, “The Becoming One Community Foundation was born out of a need and concern for what is going on now in todays world.” Recidivism is a concept that refers to the relapse of an individual back into previous unwanted behaviors. In the state of Texas, the rate of recidivism is at 31.9% (2011). This means that 31.9 out of 100 individuals will go back to prison. That is not good! Becoming One Community was created to lower the rate of recidivism. Our mission is to empower ex-offenders with the support of the community to become positive contributors to society. Our goal is to successfully empower 10% of individuals who complete our program. According to the Center for Impact Research; education, employment services, stable housing, and healthy living are the keys to reducing recidivism. Becoming One Community provides the following projects to address those issues: job search preparation, financial management, healthy living, housing assistance, legal rights, and mentorship.
