FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FRIENDS OF SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER CONDEMNS STUDENT ENDORSEMENT OF ANTI- ISRAEL MOTION AT CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY Toronto, December 6, 2014: Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) condemns Concordia Universitys undergraduate student union vote in favour of supporting the anti-Israel boycott movement. The results, released last night, show the anti-Israel side won by just over 100 votes; only 2,580 students voted out of a total population of 35,000 students. FSWC is appalled to see the results of this vote at Concordia, particularly as the memory of the 2002 anti- Netanyahu riot and antisemitic violence is still fresh in the minds of the Jewish community, said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. It is distressing to see the level of antisemitism at the university has again reared its ugly head and Jewish students once again are harassed and intimidated at a Canadian university. FSWC plans to contact the university to discuss the anti-Israel action, which has been denounced by the university president. In a statement Concordia president Alan Shepard explained, In my view, a boycott barring us from contact with other universities and scholars would be contrary to the value of academic freedom that is a pillar of Concordia and of universities all over the world.
