FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 1, 2014 CONTACT: Doug Self, Sports Information Director, 580-774-7162 Softball Splits Opening Series with New Mexico Highlands WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU softball team started the season in exciting fashion, winning the season-opener 4-3 over New Mexico Highlands on a walk off home run before the Cowgirls claimed a 4-2 victory in game two to get a series split. Game 1: SWOSU 4, New Mexico Highlands 3 Box Score SWOSU got nine hits in the season opener but left seven base runners on before converting in the clutch during the final inning. Trailing 3-1, Courtney Miller reached on an error and Ashley Dunigan doubled to open the rally which was closed by Nikki Brandt, who’s three-run home run gave SWOSU the 4-3 walk off victory. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Miller scored the Bulldogs previous run in the game, coming across on a double by Adrienne Martinez in the third inning. NMHU responded with one run in the top of the fourth and held a 3-1 lead until the bottom of the seventh. Julianne Martinez earned the victory after allowing six hits and three runs – two earned – while striking out nine batters in the complete-game performance. Game 2: New Mexico Highlands 4, SWOSU 2 Box Score The Bulldogs again got plenty of base runners in game two, stranding eight on the base path despite just four hits in the game. SWOSU tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Caitlyn Deason, but a two-run home run by Dekota Monarrez – her second of the game – turned the tide back in the Cowgirls favor and allowed them to split the doubleheader. Mallory Davis tossed the first six innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs and she was saddled with the loss. Molly Vivo came in in relief of Davis to pitch the seventh inning. Sunday’s games against NMHU have been cancelled due to weather, meaning the Bulldogs (1-1) are not scheduled to play again until February 14-17 at the Arkansas-Monticello Crossover in Bentonville, Ark. ## @SWOSUAthletics ## Doug Self Sports Information Director Southwestern Oklahoma State University O: (580) 774-7162 C: (785) 640-8471
