FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, July 12, 2013 WHITE SOX ACQUIRE OUTFIELDER BRANDON JACOBS FROM BOSTON IN EXCHANGE FOR PITCHER MATT THORNTON AND CASH CONSIDERATIONS PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Brandon Jacobs from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for left-handed pitcher Matt Thornton and cash considerations. Jacobs, 22, is hitting .247 (74-299) with 25 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 RBI, 46 runs scored and 10 stolen bases over 84 games between Class A Salem (81 games) and Class AA Portland (three games). He hit .421 (16-38) with six doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI over his final 11 games with Salem before being promoted to Portland on July 10. Jacobs is a career .265 hitter (381-1,438) with 47 homers, 216 RBI and 61 stolen bases over five minor-league seasons in the Boston organization. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder was selected in the 10th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Parkview (Ga.) High School. Jacobs, who bats and throws right-handed, entered the 2013 season rated by MLB as the 11th-best prospect in the Red Sox organization. Thornton, 37, is 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA (12 ER/28.0 IP), 18 holds and 21 strikeouts over 40 relief appearances this season. He is 31-35 with a 3.28 ERA (169 ER/463.1 IP), 164 holds and 486 strikeouts in 512 career games with the White Sox. Thornton ranks among Chicago’s all-time relief leaders in appearances (1st), holds (1st), strikeouts (2nd), wins (T3rd) and strikeouts (5th).
