FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE I am announcing my candidacy for the Circuit Judge vacancy recently created by the new Sub-Circuit legislation. This will be designated as “New Judgeship A” on the ballot for the March 18, 2014 primary. I am currently a Circuit Judge, appointed to fill the vacancy of Judge Sheldon upon his retirement in 2012. Prior to my appointment as Circuit Judge, I served the 16th Judicial Circuit as an Associate Judge for over 20 years. In my 21 1/2 years as a judge, I have served in nearly every division in the judiciary. Beginning in1992, I was assigned to the traffic and misdemeanor division and I am currently assigned to a felony trial courtroom. Between 1992 and my current assignment, I have also been assigned: Family Court, DUI Court, Domestic Violence and Orders of Protections. My experience as a trial judge has included trials ranging from violations of handicap parking to murders. In terms of experience, there are only two sitting judges who have served on the bench longer than me. I am a mentor in the judicial mentoring program for new judges. I am looking forward to continuing my service to the people of Kane County. Personal History: I have been married to my wife, Barb, for 38+ years and we have raised three daughters. We are enjoying the growth and development of our grandson, age 6 and granddaughters age 3 and 6 months. I have lived in Elgin my entire life and currently reside in Plato Township in the 3rd Sub-Circuit. Prior to my appointment as a judge in 1992, I was engaged in the general practice of law primarily with the office of Wilder & Hallock. I have been active in the community with the Jaycees and am a past president of the Elgin Jaycees. Recreationally, I continue to play softball in a men’s league (albeit a 50 and over league as I’m no longer able to hit and run against the 20 somethings). I am an avid fisherman and particularly enjoy teaching my grandson to fish for bluegills. Background on the 3rd Sub-Circuit. For many years, the 16th Judicial Circuit consisted of three counties: Kane, Kendall & DeKalb. Recently Kendall County and DeKalb counties split off from the 16th Judicial Circuit and became the 23rd Judicial Circuit. In recent years, the legislature has been creating sub-circuits in the Chicago Metro area, including Kane County. Prior to the split up of the 16th Judicial Circuit, the 3rd Sub-Circuit included the western part of Kane County from about South Elgin, south to and including Kendall County. The first judge elected in the 3rd sub-circuit as it was then designed was Judge Karen Simpson. Following the split of Kendall and DeKalb counties from Kane County, the sub-circuit legislation designated the next vacancy for Circuit Judge to go to the 3rd Sub-circuit. The next vacancy was created when Judge Sheldon retired and his position is now designated New Judgeship A in the 3rd sub-circuit. I am seeking the position now known as New Judgeship A. Recently Judge Simpson announced her retirement as Circuit Judge; her sub-circuit is the 3rd Sub-Circuit now comprising approximately the western 2/3 of Kane County, essentially all of the townships except those along the Fox River. There are two other candidates seeking to fill her position. I am not a candidate in that race to fill her vacancy but to fill the vacancy designated New Judgeship A.
