FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 12, 2014 Officer Involved Shooting (Litchfield Beach, SC)---A Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old, white female with alleged mental health issues. At approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 12, 2014, Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Ashcraft Circle in the Litchfield Beach Community of Georgetown County for a welfare check. Sheriff’s deputies were contacted by a family member concerned for her well-being and a legal representative that the subject was in a bathroom with a knife threatening to harm herself. Sheriff’s deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence and located the property manager who unlocked the door. When sheriff’s deputies were clearing the residence, the female allegedly charged the deputies with a knife. A sheriff’s deputy at that moment used lethal force to stop the subject. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called to investigate the shooting and the crime scene. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
