This life threatening virus is not airborne, but is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person. Although Chicago had two recent Ebola scares, there are no confirmed cases in this city. However, New York City confirmed that Dr. Craig Spencer, who worked in Africa with the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, does have Ebola. Spencer, who had cautiously taken his temperature twice a day since returning from Guinea on Oct. 17, first developed Ebola symptoms on Thursday morning. Dr. Spencer had ridden subways, taken a taxi and visited a bowling alley. The 33 year doctor, was taken from his Manhattan apartment to isolation at Bellevue Hospital by a team wearing protective gear, according to city officials. Chicago Mayoral Candidate William Dock Walls is calling upon Mayor Rahm Emanuel to use his Executive Authority, and enact an Emergency Executive Order requiring all Chicago restaurants, school cafeterias, eateries, and other prepared food dispensaries to use disposable plastic cups, forks, knives and spoons; as well as paper plates and napkins. Walls said “In response to the serious threat presented by the Ebola virus, we must take precautionary measures to reduce the potential for this deadly virus to rapidly spread throughout Chicago’s dense population.” Although, the extreme requirements under such an Executive Order may pose a hardship on local businesses, our first responsibility is to protect the public from possible exposure to the Ebola virus. The seriousness of this severe illness, alone, requires us to act rather than react. We cannot rely upon the individual cleaning processes employed by the various Food Dispensaries to safeguard the people of Chicago. Walls is calling upon Mayor Emanuel to act decisively with speed and clarity. ###
