FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RELEASE #: 002 DATE: August 14, 2013 CAMP SIERRA, Afghanistan(Aug. 14, 2013) – The Provincial Reconstruction team partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to complete Panjshir Valley road project today. The PRT’s goals are to improve security to extend the authority of the Afghan central government, and to facilitate reconstruction. USAID’s goals are to help people overseas who are struggling to better their lives, recover from disaster or live in a free and democratic country. Approximately thousands of formerly isolated Afghans will be affected by allowing them a shorter and easier commute to other villages. The project took a year total and costs $16 million. The PRT and USAID also partnered to install a gravity-powered water tank and faucet system for Garsmir in Helmand Province. The village of approximately 200 households can get fresh and clean water through 46 water taps instead of fetching it in pails from several miles away. A month long first aid course started three days ago in the village of Kajak. The course will train 40 local medicine men in the application of first-aid and provide them with inoculations against disease and will cost about $15,000.
