FOR KAVITA SHAH, MY HALDWANI CONNECTION Very surprised to know you are from Haldwani also, I wouldent know how old you are, or which year you were in All Saints, but the mention of Pilibhit , brought about your reaction that you have a farm some 18 minutes from Pilibhit, then came the mention of Haldwani, and there you were from Haldwani also, so I will give you somethings that I remember about Haldwani. I moved from Pilibhit to Haldwani when I was about 2 years old, My father had been in Haldwani long before that, his elder brother was there long before him. He also was teaching the boys in Haldwani Inter College, and was known as Maulvi Sahib, Many of the old sardar Gentlemen remember him very fondly. When I was probably 5 or 6 that is in 1956 my father hired a saw mill , what you would call Ara Machine, belonging to some Mr. Shukla, this is on the road from tikonia going to the Air Port, or Hawai Adda as we knew it. Just on the tikonia was a Petrol Pump that belonged to Dillu’s father. Who was my fathers friend, they also had a farm. Then in 1957 my father rented a land on tanakpur Road and built a saw mill there, it was just near the Gola Gate, that is where the cremation grounds are. Dad got into politics and became the vice chairman. And after the Chairman got thrown off he became the Chairman, this must have been in 1962. He got Haldwani its fire Brigade. He had friends like Harbans Singh who owns a Petrol Pump near the States Bank. He knew a whole lot of Sardar jee, and I just know a little of them, yes there was a Bedi we had in Sherwood , he was much junior to me, he had some stone crushing thing near the railway station, Then there was this sardar jee who had an electric shop on the road coming from the Railway station into the market. Then there was tehal Singh who had a transport. We had a fellow called Surinder Pall Singh, we called him Bunda because he use to wear a bunda in one ear with a red stone in it. He was a year junior to me. He had two sisters the younger one called Rani was with me in Buck School , below Ramzey in Nainital. Bunda had a transport he had some 20 trucks, and was called Rawel Motors. He lived in Tikonia, his house is on the right hand when you come from Kathgodam to Haldwani. A big spacious place. His father died got parkinsons disease. His mum I met in 2009 she had broken her leg , was a old lady. Bundas business went down, he married a girl they were a sardar family who had come from Tehran. Could this Bedi Villa be the people that had this stone crushing business near the Station. My stay in Haldwani right from 1958 to 1968 consisted of three months winter Holidays, so I didn’t know much about Dads friends. He had friends like Vidhya Rattan, Imrat Lal, and a whole lot of others. This is my side of the storey, and if you like you can tell me yours. So nice to get in touch with you through the inter net, the Pilibhit, the Haldwani. Dillo who had the Petrol Pump got something in his neck, he always rode the scooter with his neck pointing off centre, Hey there was Jajat Singh the Photographer, I had a photo when I was 5 year I don’t know where it is now, the other black and white photos with dad are from his shop, well that was the only shop of photography in Haldwani. My house was , when you come from the Railway Station, the road going to the left, as you come down the slope. Then when you reach the chorgulia Road, that is just about 150 meters away, there are two saw mills next to my house. I still remember I had to write chorgulia road on my address. Well you may not have been there. Do write something about Haldwani. FOR KAVITA SINGH, MY HALDWANI CONNECTION
