The Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) was established to help reduce our States budget deficit. The GEA reduces the state education aid that school districts are entitled to receive and shifts the remaining balance of funding a school budget onto the taxpayers. FACT #1 GEA reduced state aid to Long Island school districts by nearly $1 billion over the past three years. Harborfields CSD has lost $9,272,526 over the past five years in school aid. This years loss will be $1,851,913. FACT # 2 Anticipating a surplus in 2016-2017, the State is adjusting the GEA by restoring a portion of education aid to each school district. This is known as GEA Restoration. FACT #3 THE GEA Restoration to Long Island school districts is vastly disproportional to other regions in NYS. In fact, Harborfields CSD is only expected to receive a restoration of $46,297 for its 2014-2015 school budget. WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO: We have created a very simple email statement which you can copy (see below) or compose your own personalized statement and email it to our legislators. If you want to send a personalized or more detailed commentary feel free to compose your own letter, then mail it to legislators. Share this email with everyone you know who is a Long Island resident and tell them to customize for their school district. EMAIL STATEMENT TO LEGISLATORS: Now that NYS projects an end to their budget deficit by 2016-2017, we urge you to support and fight for the repeal of the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) starting in the 2014-2015 school year. This year we anticipate that Harborfields CSD will only receive $46,297; a truly insignificant and inequitable amount of funding when compared to other regions of New York State. We now turn to our State leaders and ask your help. We need our state aid so that our school district can restore the programs and staff we have lost, and provide a better educational experience for our children.
