FOR THE RECORD ....Of the 149 departing Alofi, Niue, 73 of the men were married and 30 left behind families of 1 to 4 children. Five wives were pregnant. One family from Hikutavake farewelled 4 sons. At least 7 families farewelled two sons each. People on Niue tell the story of a headcount being conducted on the ship and, when it was discovered there were only 149, Pomare calling for one more. No one wanted to join but eventually Peki Matagitakai, a policeman of Alofi, agreed to go. When his wife, Tapola of Hakupu, heard he had gone she swam out to the boat to say goodbye and there were many tears and much sadness..... GOD BLESS ALL OUR SOLDIERS X
