FOR THOSE WHO COULDNT MAKE IT to the boffo Vintage Los Angeles screening of EARTHQUAKE in Downtown L.A. last Saturday evening, or who dont live nearby, heres a reel of my scenes from the 1974 Universal Pictures box office smash -- conceived and produced by my late husband, Jennings Lang. As sprawling, stunt-and FX-filled films, disaster movies often overlook consistent acting in pursuit of spectacle, and EARTHQUAKE certainly contains its share of uneven performances by an otherwise seasoned star roster. But hey, give us credit for doing our own stunts in the pre-digital age! (The Stuntmens Association of Motion Pictures even made me an honorary captain for swinging four stories above a soundstage floor in a rescue chair.) Im best remembered for the comic-relief moment in which Lorne Greene commands me to remove my pantyhose in the heat of crisis; this may have been an homage to my days as a spokesmodel for Burlington Mills Hosiery. PLEASE NOTE: Some of these scenes are graphic -- and the ultimate visual fate of the plunging elevator may give rise to spirited aesthetic debate, if not an inadvertent hoot, as it did back in the day. :) oxo, Monica
