FOR ntv7’s The Breakfast Show host Lisa Wong, cycling isn’t - TopicsExpress

FOR ntv7’s The Breakfast Show host Lisa Wong, cycling isn’t part of her usual workout regime even though she is an exercise buff. “I run mostly, usually outdoor as I love the freshness and challenge of different terrain. Additionally, I do body-weightworkouts to tone my muscles,” she says. Admittedly, she has never cycled more than a kilometre in the last eight years. “My husband is an avid cyclist. While I was in university, my husband (then boyfriend) surprised me with a bike (a simple three-gear bike with a basket on the front) so I could ride to classes.” “I did that for a while, but it was a short and flat route, so it was a painless ride. These days, I only get on a bike if I report on a cycling story.” She was a little worried about her cycling ability prior to joining the Green Ride, but she was up for the challenge as it was a fun ride and held in scenic Cyberjaya. “I am also a believer in reducing our carbon footprint,” says Wong who’s a vegetarian. “Thinking about how we live sustainably is the only way to ensure our planet’s future. So, when the Green Ride supports the causes I share — getting healthy and going green, I was excited and got myself involved. I was geared to go all out and have fun.” “I have been contemplating getting a bike for some time now, and this event proved that I should, because a bike can be so much fun.” Enjoying every moment of the Green Ride, Wong took her time to take in the scenery. “I discovered that Cyberjaya is really a pretty city with its lakes, hills and green, and not forgetting the well-designed buildings. “Being a novice, I wasn’t going for first place,” she says. “So I just rode at a manageable pace with my co-riders, Fly FM deejays, Hafiz, Ben and Ivan. The 20km was scenic and the terrain was not too difficult. The organisation was good so that prevented any mishaps. I am just so glad to collect my certificate at the end.” Wong commended NST for an excellent initiative. Apart from running, she says cycling is gaining popularity as a sport and there is a fast-growing number of cycling-enthusiasts around. “So, apart from gathering these cyclists, the event also got families out on their bikes for health and fun. It was great to see young children taking part. “I spoke with other participants, and I was glad to find out that there were many returning cyclists who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One dad said he really liked the very generous goodie bag, which was of a higher value than his entry fee.” Wong says she would do this again if the opportunity arises. “It was really fun for me so much so that I was not prepared to let go of the bike at the end, and continued riding for a little more. Who knew cycling could be so addictive?” Wong is in full support of such activities. “Outdoor activities allow you to explore the country. I don’t always go to Cyberjaya and this event opened my eyes to how serene and pretty the place is. “Another thing I realised was that traveling to a place in a car is very different to say, cycling or going on foot. With the latter two, you can really take time to savour and appreciate the beauty of the place.”
