FORECAST FOR TODAY: HATE MAIL LIKELY FOR MANY METEOROLOGISTS AFTER BIG SNOW BUST Unlike the snow last night, this forecast is already verifying...lol:) I guess this snow-loving Patriots fan just suffered his own version of #DeflateGate, in terms of snow totals. I always believe a good meteorologist, and yes those words today seem like they dont belong beside each other, does two things: 1.) Be humble and admit when youre wrong. 2.) Use the blunder as a teaching tool, and learn from your mistakes. The great thing about being a weatherman in South Jersey: Youre education never stops. Well allow me to oblige. BOY, was I wrong, and for that I apologize. And instead of enthusiastically staying up all last night watching the snow totals climb, I was up instead nervously learning where the forecast went astray, and trying not to beat myself as much as I normally do when a forecast goes awry. I think its tougher to sleep after a blown forecast(mind racing and wondering where it went all wrong) than it is when its snowing and blowing outside(afraid to sleep and miss a single flake). In case youre wondering, it was the sharp western cutoff setting up about 25-50 miles farther east than I thought(in this case, right over us), coupled with persistent sinking air over South Jersey/Philly. Air was rapidly rising(which generates snow) just offshore, and air was rising and creating snow to our west over central PA. But what goes up must come down, and the air(not the snow) came down over South Jersey. Sinking air prevented the snow to really take hold in South Jersey, and this was the unexpected factor that played a big part in the bust. One thing Ive learned in all this: And so ends the European computer models reign as the king of weather models. Maybe it is time to indeed buy American...lol:)
