FOUND IN TRANSLATION Im having fun today with the Italians on my list, as I learn to play with Google Translator. It appears, for the most part, that the Translator simply moves American concepts into other linguistic symbols. Observing the outcome gives me a chance to notice what it might be like to actually THINK like an Italian, a South American, or whatever. Susy Peralta and I have been playing this Game for years. Shell attempt to translate an article or transmission---and then shell write me and ask what a particular English colloquialism means. There are times when one word or phrase in English requires a small sentence in Spanish---in order to portray the ideas behind the words. IN many ways, a Translator is as much of a channel as the person he or she is seeking to translate. A Bridge between cultures. When I first got on FB, I was a bit distressed at all the varying cultures who were asking to be friended. Id look at their pages, all in Russian or Spanish or Indonesian---and I would say to myself: What do I have to say to these folks? Now, thanks to this new technology........I feel like the Starship Enterprise, exploring new worlds, lifestyles, and systems for thinking and being. Such a gift.
