FOUR Bahrainis who attacked a Bangladeshi labourer with a brick and left him lying in a pool of his own blood have been jailed. The young men had attempted to mug their victim in Salmabad last December, according to court documents. However, they were unable to steal his mobile phone and ran away after being disturbed. The victim told prosecutors that he had been walking down the street when he was approached by the gang, who told him to give them his money. I told them that I had spent it, before one of them tried to snatch my mobile phone out of my hands, he said. I held on to it tightly so they hit me with a brick over my head. I passed out and do not know what happened next. A Bahraini passer-by, who came to the Bangladeshis rescue, told the court he had scared of the defendants. I saw them attacking an Asian man in the street, he said in his statement to prosecutors. So I ran towards them and took the victim into a building while I called an ambulance. Three of the defendants, two aged 20 and one aged 21, were sentenced to five years behind bars by the High Criminal Court yesterday for assault and attempted theft. A 16-year-old also found guilty of the same charges was given a reduced sentence of three years due to being under the age of 18.
