FOUR POWERFUL WOES Woe simple means “Deep sorrow, grief, or affliction. In the Bible the word woe is often used, particularly by the Old Testament prophets, as an exclamation expressing dismay or misfortune (Isa 3:9,11; Jer 10:19; Amos 5:18).” In the New Testament Jesus pronounced woes on the cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida (Matt 11:21), on the scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers (Luke 11:42-44), and on the one who betrayed Him (Mark 14:21). Our lesson today shall focus on four very important woes that Jesus pronounced and see how it relates to us in this present age. Mt 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. You cannot grow in pretence. No one can deceive God. We admonished to care for widows and orphans James 1:27. What motive is driving your giving. Mt 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. The emphasis here is majoring in minors. Sometime we pervert justice. Sometimes we are not merciful and most often out faith is shallow. God desires that we place emphasis where he has placed. Mt 23:25 `Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence. Mt 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead mens bones, and of all uncleanness.
