FOUR things that would make the world a better place: Require of youth aged 16 to 21 to do no less than 6 months to a year of all of the following volunteer services after school: 1. Work in the service industry waiting tables or taking customer service calls. This teaches patience, composure, and what its like to be treated like crap by an entitled a$$hole for no reason as well as the difference kindness can make from a customer who is totally understanding when you screw up. 2. Ride-along with police. You will see exactly what they have to deal with every day, what risks they take, the kindness and patience that they show, and gain a better understanding of exactly WHY some behaviors are bad and what they cause. Learn how to be a better citizen. 3. Ride along with EMS. Youll gain an appreciation of your health and life, wont be as bothered by the small stuff, will understand the difference between an emergency and an inconvenience, understand discomfort vs pain, will learn composure in an emergency and how to act under pressure, will learn more about equality and humanity, and will realize that you are WAY more normal than you ever thought. 4. Work as a CNA for the elderly: not only do you gain a real appreciation for life and your elders, but it would relieve the problems associated with inadequate staffing and poor care in rest homes. When you can understand that its a privilege to wipe a strangers a$$ for them, there is hope for the world.
