FOURTH OF JULY. Great preparations seem to be making in every part of the Union for celebrating our National birthday, and from present appearances we believe there is no place in the U. States where it will be hailed with more heartfelt enthusiasm or honored with greater festivity than in Savannah. The Norfolk Herald, speaking of this anniversary, says – “Here we order things differently, though not more deficient in patriotism, perhaps, than our neighbors, we have a strange way of evincing it: we seldom hear the day talked of until the roar of cannon rouses us from our morning slumbers, and the `spirit stirring drum and ear-piercing fife’ warn us that a military parade is about to take place. We then bethink ourselves of eating and drinking in honor of the day. Some twenty or thirty of us meet at one place – the same number at another, and so on to half a dozen different parties—regale ourselves with the choice fish, flesh and fowl – swallow a glass of wine in honor of each of the two and twenty states (and as many more as we can find for) and retire peaceably and soberly to our respective homes.” July 1, 1820, Savannah Daily. Georgian.
