FOXCATCHER (2014) Director Bennett Miller paints movies like they were still portraits and waits for the actors expression to propel the film. FOXCATCHER is the true story of excentric millionaire John Du Pont (Steve Carell) who takes under his tutelage an Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum). Together they want to become Olympic champions again. Like his previous film Capote, Miller pulls back the richness and movement of the film and tries to let Carell and Tatum move us much like Hoffman did in Capote. It works on some level as both performances are haunting. But I am not sure that Miller ever shows the humanity in each of these characters. Miller tries but never gets the emotion he needed to pull the movie off. I really liked the character study and performances which is the reason it was on my top 10 of the year. But it isnt a great film by any stretch of the imagination. (4 out of 5) So Says the Soothsayer youtu.be/8361stZ8n0w
