FOXNEWS Sunday in Washington, with Chris Wallace: https://youtube/watch?v=DfEaBvksU0Y 14.09 minutes released 24 June 2013 Subject: Border Surge Amendment to the Senate Immigration Reform Bill (Interview with Senators Lindsay, SC and Mike Lee, ID - Nothing has changed yet.) go to. . .(3:50) Sen. Mike Lee: They promised us that under this bill, that illegal immigration would be a thing of the past. It wont. CBO told us this week that ten years from now well still have 6 to 8 million (illegal) immigrants in this country. They told us it would be tough but fair - and its neither. Its not tough on those who have broken the law and its not fair to those who have been patiently waiting their turn in line, to come to this country legally. Perhaps worst of all Chris, we learned late Friday, just late Friday, that they are going to replace the entire Gang of Eight bill, about 1000 pages, with a 1200 page Corker-Hoeven Amendment. This is a provision few people have read and even fewer understand. So look, we all want immigration reform, but this Bill is not the right vehicle for getting there. Chris Wallace: All right, so lets talk about this amendment which has changed the calculus and apparently added 10 to 15 more Republican votes. Its being called the Border Surge Amendment and lets take a look at, specifically, what it would do. DOUBLE BORDER AGENTS TO 40,000 COMPLETE 700 MILES OF NEW FENCE DEPLOY DRONES, RADAR AND GROUND SENSORS E-VERIFY FOR ALL EMPLOYERS INCREASE ENTRY-EXIT TRACKING ON VISAS Senator Lee, is your problem that you dont think that even with this $40 Billion dollars in extra border enforcement, you dont think its going to work, or is your problem the sequencing, the idea that its going to allow Provisional Legal Status for the 11 million people, immigrants, who are already here, before you get all of this Border Enforcement in place? Senator Lee: As a proponent of Immigration Reform, my problem has always been with sequencing and with the fact that its not a good idea to attack the entire problem at once. Thats how you end up with a 1200 page Bill. And with the sequencing of this Bill, in particular, we have to look at when the pathway to citizenship begins, basically, on day one. But it will take many, many years, if not decades, to implement all these border security measures. Chris Wallace: Senator Graham, you say that many of the Republicans who are opposed to (the Bill) who talk about border security - - they really just dont favor a path to citizenship. But the Congressional Budget Office, and this is something that Senator Lee brought up, the CBO said that your Gang of Eight Bill would only reduce illegal immigration by 25%? (SPF – Ignorance must be bliss!) Senator Graham: ah - Theyre talking about the entry - exit problem. Forty percent of the people who are here illegally, overstayed their VISAs. There will be improvement in that area. As to the border, weve practically militarized the borders. Ive been hearing for years, Lets secure the borders. Lets regain our sovereignty. We have secured our border in a way I could not have imagined 4 or 5 years ago. This whole Border Security Amendment, I think, is the most aggressive attempt to control the southern border and regain our sovereignty. (When was the last time you were down there, talking to Governors and the land owners; the towns people plagued with violence and corruption?) This Bill reduces our deficit by $890 Billion dollars, it is good for our economy. This Bill is good for our National Security. No one can get a green card until the border security measures are up and running, until E-Verify is up and running, controlling the jobs in America. As to the 11 million, they will have a earned, hard pathway to citizenship. They have to get in the back of the line before they can become a citizen - they cant cut in line. They have to pass two English proficiency exams. I reject the idea of becoming the mid-east or Europe, where you have 11 million people with a legal status who cant become part of America. America is different from the middle-east or Europe. E Pluris Unum* - out of many - one. (*editors note: s/b E Pluribus Unum or De Multi - Unum in Latin) This is a good solution for our National Security, for our economy and a tough practical solution for our 11 million and most importantly, if we do this Bill,- Amnesty is the status quo. If we do this Bill, there will be no third wave of illegal immigration. (????) Chris Wallace: Let me ask you about another objection that Senator Lee just mentioned. The idea that this is going to be some huge 1200 page Bill - I heard you complaining about that during ObamaCare, about this huge Bill that nobodys read and why not take it in more incremental bite-sized pieces. Why not in this case? Senator Graham: Well, lets look at it this way. Give the Republicans all the border security they want and all the legal immigration you want and trust the Republicans to deal fairly with the 11 million. Thats not gonna sell to a Democrat. And Im sure as hell not going to accept an agreement where they get legalization and a pathway to citizenship, then they give me border security. You have to do it together. We have tried border security and legal immigration to green card status. Until - - - (*editors note: go to 8:55 on the video and see if you can understand what hes saying. I sure as hell cant.) SPF: A blast from the past. Nothings changed yet.
