According to Health24 - The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) has officially announced their campaign to test Karoo drinking water quality before proposed shale gas mining in the area is set to begin. A process called Fracking has been known to leave traces of carcinogenic chemical in the water table of the area. This could have potential cancer risks for residents in the area.
