★★★ FRANCE-LIBYA RELATIONSHIP ★★★ (#3) Extracts from Gilles Thevenons book: The Fifth Republic, french political life. Edited by Chronique Sociale, Lyon, 2012. The relationships with Libya and its «guide» Muammar Gaddafi, at the head of State since September 1st, 1969 had never been simple. Since July 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy, through a mission in which his wife Cecilia played a rule, had worked for the release of Bulgarian nurses and of a Palestinian doctor whom the Libyan regime accused of having knowingly inoculated children with AIDS virus. The official visit of the Libyan leader in Paris, the first since 1973, gave rise to controversy because of its actions: the Libyan «guide» gave himself over diverse provocations. He contradicted the president of the French Republic, acted like a tiresome tourist and put up his Bedouin tent in the garden of Hotel Marigny, the official residence for official delegations and heads of States. In March 2011, facing the bloody repression that Gaddafi imposed on his revolted people, France, relying on the 1973 United Nations Security Councils resolution, got military involved and recognized the «National Transitional Council» (TNC). The Gaddafi regime collapsed on August 23rd 2011. «Thanks France» could be read in Benghazi on banderoles bearing the picture of French President Nicolas Sarkozy .
