FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT MUSEUM Five days ago we visited the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum in Phoenix. Fred (who has an architectural degree from the Netherlands) and Elisabeth had always been interested in the great western architects of the 20th century, including Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Luigi Nervi etc. We specifically traveled to Phoenix to visit Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s private home and architectural campus. Built in stages between 1937 and 1959 this desert inspired building is generally considered to be the greatest achievement of probably the greatest architect of the 1900s. Taliesin West is where Frank set up his School of Architecture, which is regarded the world’s most hands-on, nature stimulated architectural studies attracting Apprentices (students) from all over the world paying some $40,000 per annum for the privilege of studying in this truly awesome facility. Many (most) of the Apprentices have become famous architects in their own right. We were given a fantastic, 90-minute tour by Jim Becker, a most knowledge guide who explained us about the fascinating person Frank was, his private (and at times dark and scandalous) life, his love for harmony between building and nature, and for Japanese art, his favourite form (triangle) and colour (Cherokee red), his interest in music and movies, in many formal parties, and his great collection of classic cars. We felt very impressed and inspired by the harmony Frank Lloyd Wright had been able to create by building Taliesin West in the harsh, but so beautiful Sonora Dessert.
