FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 29, 2013) – “The Godfather,” rated among the best motion pictures of all time, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, as part of the Grand Theatre’s summer film series. Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece from 1972 tells the story of an aging Mafia don, Vito Corleone, and his family as they struggle to maintain control of the “family business.” Among its three Oscars were Best Picture and Best Actor (Marlon Brando.) The movie made a superstar of Al Pacino as Vito’s son Michael, who reluctantly takes over the reins from his father. Pacino was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, along with co-stars James Caan (Sonny Corleone) and Robert Duvall (family attorney/advisor Tom Hagen.) The three nominations cancelled each other out, and the Oscar went to Joel Grey for “Cabaret.” Just as “The Godfather” is the story of an Italian family, Coppola made it a family affair, as well. He cast six family members in various roles, including sister Talia Shire as Connie Corleone, and three-week-old daughter Sofia as a baby being christened. (Sofia maintains the Coppola family business today as a respected director.) “The Godfather” is rated “R” and has a running time of 2 hours, 55 minutes. Tickets are $6. More information is available by visiting the Grand Theatre Web site, grandtheatrefrankfort.org, or the ticket office, 312 W. Main St weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or by calling 502-352-7469. Tickets are sold at the ticket office and at the door.
