FREE JABEUR MEJRI! Tunisian jailed for “insulting Islam” must be released!!! Jabeur Mejri was sentenced on 28 March 2012 to seven and a half years in prison after a court deemed posts he made online insulting to Islam and Muslims. Jabeur Mejri was arrested on 5 March 2012 a few days after two lawyers in Mahdia saw his online posts including images of the prophet Mohamed and filed a complaint against him. He was given the maximum punishment for each of the charges meaning a total of seven and a half years imprisonment and a fine of 1200 Tunisian Dinars (757 US dollars). On 23 June 2012 the Monastir Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and his sentence. His lawyers then took the case to the Court of Cassation. Jabeur Mejri remains in Mahdia prison. His family have been able to visit him and have said that he is emotionally tired from what they described as his unjust imprisonment. His sister told Amnesty International: “Jabeur is worried and depressed because he has been in prison for a year now,and he feels that he has been forgotten.” Send an appeal on behalf of Jabeur Mejri to Prime Minister Ali Laarayedh.
