FREE SPEECH, Q.A.I.A., & PRIDE: I am interested in hearing your respectful views. There is a controversy in Toronto. A group called Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (Q.A.I.A.) has asked to participate in Pride Torontos annual celebrations. Pride is a private organization, but receives public funds. Private entities are not usually compelled to carry the messages of others (for example, peaceful protesters can be barred from a private mall, but not from a public street demonstration). The presence of Q.A.I.A. in Pride been a challenge as donors have threatened to pull funds if Q.A.I.A. participates. The question to you: should Pride be required to allow Q.A.I.A. in the parade? Essentially, has Pride become a private entity which carries out a public function and so must protect the freedom of expression of all Canadian residents (including those who OPPOSE Pride)?
