FREE, YES . FAIR, ? FAIR,?? Not as if I was expecting the local station in my state ( OSRC ) to carry the news of the defection of some aggrieved members of the ruling party to the opposition party in the state. Still, I tuned in at 7pm yesterday night to reaffirm my expectation. They did not disappoint! My dad had unusually come home early that day and I had taunted him of my expectation. His response was vague and barely audible. I didnt care about it as I know he would as a matter of fact try to absolve his paymasters. After all, he who pays the piper dictates the tune. That is the civility servitude teaches you. As it has been in the last few days, the only newsworthy item on OSRC news broadcast is either the campaign trail of Mr President or the endorsement of his reelection bid by one mushroom group or the other. The average indigene of Ondo state living in indigence and without the alternative means of television broadcast have had to endure this display of shamelessness in broadcasting ethics for sometime now. And I wouldnt even consider this worth writing about if not for the audacity of hypocrisy yet on display today. After the disservice of not reporting the massive defection that rocked the PDP camp, OSRC had the gut to report the denial of defection from one of the supposed decampees in their news item the following day. They couldnt even shamefully avoid any story related to the decamping all together and pretend to be unaware of the event. If a seemingly inconsequential and isolated corporation in the overall national scheme of things as OSRC can be this sychophantic, prejudiced, unsportmanlike, prior to this election just to defer to her paymaster, how much more is Prof Jegas INEC ? Is it not high time we concentrated our energy and focus more on the umpire and less on the contestants as we prepare for the February polls? Are we not tacitly heading for a free but unfair election? It is exactly a month to the election and not a single soul that registered in August for this election has been given a Permanent Voters Card. And to think our Prof had more than forty eight months to prepare for this! I am worried. OSRC can continue hitting below the intellect with their show of unprofessionalism in reportage,I shall soon write a petition against them to the National Broadcasting Commission to that effeect. But as far as INEC is concerned, we must collectively scrutinize Jegas activities in the build up to this election. His body languages must be watched closely. This election must not just be free but be fair to all. Adedayo OlaOluwa fisayo aka Ogbeni La writes from the Sunshine state.
