FREEDOM THROUGH MILITARY VICTORY THE DIVINE VIEWPOINT OF THE MILITARY The following biblical tenets will illuminate your thinking concerning the purpose and necessity of the military. God authorizes a military so the human race can survive war and guard freedom, just as He authorizes the sword of state (Rom. 13:4) so the human race can survive crime and live in freedom. Freedom must be maintained. The military maintains freedom. Therefore, the military must be maintained. Enemies may appear from within of from without the nation. Scripture supports the right of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against evil and crime and a nation to defend against hostile attack. Violence of evildoers is restrained only by the stronger violence of the righteous. God could not be called good if He were to turn the world over to horrors of unbridled cruelty perpetrated by violent and bloody criminals or the unchecked aggression of invading armies. In the operation of the military in combat, the enemy must be destroyed to protect freedom. The same is true of the enemy within: the violent criminal must be removed from society - therefore, the necessity of imprisonment and capital punishment.
