Magistrate Mohamed Sallieu Seray-Wurie of the Pademba Road Magistrates Court No.2 yesterday handed a three years sentence to one Julius Harding, after the latter pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of an offensive weapon. The convict was denied an alternative of a fine. Harding was arraigned on two counts of loitering and unlawful possession of offensive weapon, contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone. According to the particulars of offence, the accused on 12 January 2014, at Jomo Kenyatta Road, Freetown, was found loitering with intent contrary to Section 8 of the Public Order Act No.46 of 1965, as well as being found in possession of an offensive weapon - scissors. Magistrate Wurie noted that being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at around 2:00am without any justification was a threat to public safety. In another matter, Esther Kamara and Ezekiel Yambasu were both remanded in prison for allegedly being in possession of an undisclosed quantity of leaves suspected to be cannabis. Police prosecutor, Sergeant 5115 Margaret Kpundeh, told the court the accused were found in possession of 251 knots suspected to be cannabis on 16 January at the Mafa field, Regent Road, Lumley, west of Freetown. The accused were represented by lawyer Alpha Sallieu Ndoleh, who applied for bail on their behalf but his application was turned down by the magistrate on the grounds that the offence was a very serious one. The matter was adjourned to 26 January.
