FREEZING RAIN/SLEET THOUGHTS: The evening model runs have come - TopicsExpress

FREEZING RAIN/SLEET THOUGHTS: The evening model runs have come in and they have given me a little more confidence in our likelihood of seeing freezing rain here in the Triad. Overall I am still not impressed with the amount of total precipitation, but definitely think the Triad will see some light icing and possibly even some sleet Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. TIMELINE: Im expecting light rain/drizzle to continue overnight Monday into the day on Tuesday with temperatures staying in the mid-upper 30s. Cold air will begin to spill into the Triad through Tuesday afternoon. Spotty light rain/drizzle will be on and off through the day Tuesday as temperatures being to cool through the afternoon. I expect temperatures to be near freezing around 7pm which is when we will have to start watching for light freezing rain. Precipitation will remain very light into Tuesday night. Toward midnight I wouldnt be surprised if some light sleet were to begin to fall in the Triad. A mix of sleet and/or freezing rain will remain possible into Wednesday morning. Low temperatures Wednesday morning will be in the mid-upper 20s so anything that falls as a liquid will freeze on contact, forming a light glaze on elevated surfaces. Temperatures will then warm into the mid 30s through Wednesday afternoon with spotty drizzle still possible. I expect the chance of precipitation to gradually taper off through Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning. That being said, a mix of sleet, freezing rain and possibly even a snowflake will be possible into early Thursday morning. Temperatures Thursday morning will drop down to right around freezing. IMPACT: I expect the impact from the freezing rain/sleet to be relatively minimal. A glaze-0.10 of ice is relatively harmless and will not be enough to cause a concern for power outages and downed trees. The roads should be 99.9% okay with the help of road crews and relatively warm soil temperatures (~40°). Bridges and overpasses will be the main places to watch for a few icy. Also look out for some light ice accumulation on porches and other elevated surfaces. There will be a greater chance of more ice accumulation toward the Triangle and points east toward the I-95 corridor. This is where we are anticipating more precipitation in general. Ive attached a selection of graphics, both technical and not so technical, to illustrate our situation and how things look to come together. As always let me know if you have any questions and Ill try to help you out. Stay safe out there!
