FREIGHTER HITS BRIDGE ( part 12) October 27, 1960 BUSHMAN DOCK FERRY LANDING IS ABANDONED Ferry service.across Sturgeon Bay was discontinued at noon today but was expected to be resumed shortly using a temporary dock being constructed on city property near the west end of the bridge. That means as of noon today use of the Bushman Dock and Terminal Co. dock on the west side as a ferry landing was discontinued. It was expected that the new dock would be ready for use by 2 or 3 p.m. Work was also going ahead this morning on preliminary aspects of a barge bridge that will be erected at the north end of the canal and will probably be ready for use by Saturday. It is anticipated that all traffic, including heavy trucks, will be handled by the temporary bridge and that ferry service will be discontinued. Construction of the dock on the west side was begun Wednesday night by crews from Roen Salvage Co. City utilities crews rigged up lights at the scene and work was continued all night. In the meantime work was also being rushed on the temporary bridge that us expected to replace.ferry service. Plans were being drawn at Peterson Builders Inc. and work on steel fabrication needed for the structure was started by Kewaunee Engineering Corp., a related firm. The barge to be used was brought here from Kewaunee. Highway crews began constructing roadways needed to channel traffic over the barge bridge. On the west side, the land being used is owned by Wisconsin Public Service Corp. The Advocate was told by an authoritative source that WPS is making no charge for the land. In announcing the discontinuance of the use of the Bushman dock property as a ferry landing, Mayor Stanley Greene issued the following statement: The following public statment is being made with reference to difficulties now existing between the city of Sturgeon Bay, acting as an agent of the State Highway Commission in the emergency operation of supplemental ferry service for the state highway bridge now closed for repairs, and the Bushman and Terminal Co. The difficulties arise of rated for the dock rental and the rates which the company insists must be charged upon various kinds of traffic using the ferry service. The.chairman of the State Highway Commission In and the common council of the city of Sturgeon bay have authorized the payment of an hourly rate of ten dollars.per hour beginning with the time at.which the ferry service started using the dock and terminating at the time when the ferry.service discontinued its use. Beyond this authorization, I have, as Mayor, no right to act. Since it is apparently the intentions of the company to insist upon other terms and since 12 noon of this Thursday,October 27, 1960 has been designated as a deadline by the company for the negotiations of other terms, I, as mayor of the city of Sturgeon Bay order the termination of the use of the companys dock by the ferry.operations and the transfer of those operations to other docking facilities which have been provided and whose location will be announced.
