FRENCH CRUISE SHIP L’AUSTRAL SAILS INTO SYDNEY FOR IT’S FIRST VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. It can voyage from the Arctic to Antarctic and has all the luxury of something seen out of a James Bond film. L’Austral, a 132-room expedition ship, has moored in Balmain this weekend for you to swing past and say “hi”. The vessel, operated by French cruise line Ponant, is on its first voyage to Australia. The 220 occupants aboard, mostly French, were said to be very interested in the Port of Sydney and all it’s history. “The ship was built in Italy three years ago,” Captain Rémi Genevaz explained. “She is beautiful; she is designed by a French designer. “It is specialised for exploring in the remote areas. “We go to Antarctica every year and the season usually lasts three months. “We also go to the Russian Far East, the Amazon, the Mediterranean and, now, Australia and New Zealand.” Captain Genevaz said the ship formed part of the youngest fleet of luxury cruise ships in the world and was very different to the traditional cruise ship. “It’s the perfect size - big enough to give some nice features but small enough to preserve the congenial atmosphere,” he said. “This ship is also a very high-tech vessel which has been fitted with all the most modern equipment you could find on a ship this size.
