FRIDAY ARTICLE TIME MANAGEMENT The phrases, “Time is money”, “Time waits for no man” or “Time is precious” all have an element of truth and this is countered by the phrase; “There is no hurry in Africa”. As much as the latter is quite ideal we must be careful that we should try and uphold the times we set for our day. In our society they are a few things we cannot be late for like a flight out of the country, an examination or the bus ride to the next city. All the mentioned factors are things that have to move with a strict timetable as they have certain results that need to be made. It is then at some notion that we give the term “BLACK TIME” which is turning out to be a dangerous aspect if kept up. For those that do not know what black time is let me give you an example: “If you are heading for a dinner party that starts at 6pm people will arrive an hour late as they are sure it won’t start at 6pm, as in Africa we do not start on time” it is adding an hour to a given timetable. In our working world people head for work and arrive early or late depending on the conditions that are present on the way to work. Harare peak hours are the most annoying times to be a driver as there is congestion along the roads as people are heading to work and you have commuter omnibuses creating their own roads. Even in the commotion you won’t fail to hear someone shout, “Iwe famba ndanonoka kubasa” so I ask how is it you late when you always know the roads will be so packed and tight?? In my view we should try and make the effort to get to our destination earlier than we want to because we cannot rely on the roads. This isn’t just about travelling to work in the morning this is in regards to what we do every day that makes us have good time management. The early morning work example is the best on as it is the most When you are going to meet someone you often lie on how far you are from the point like for example, if you want to see someone by Zimpost and you arrive early and check were the person is they will often say they will be there in 2 minutes. In reality they may still be in a commuter on route, so what makes us say such and at the same time fail to get there on time?? TIME MANAGEMENT. To have effective time management they are certain things which we can try to do and be more aware of the time and getting things done. For most people they walk around with a diary were they set times and places of which they will be doing that day, others use reminders in their phones so that they won’t forget. Being time conscious it is not an overnight thing it starts with the small things like waking up at the right time, saying you want to watch something for 10 minutes; make sure it’s 10 minutes!! If you can manage to do the small things first you can find that you can do the bigger stuff like getting to a meeting place on time. Please as much as we are in Africa we need to erase the notion “No hurry in Africa” as keeping that mindset is what will make us late for things that we would have planned for. There was once a couple who said their wedding was to take place at 2pm and when they arrived at the venue less than half the invited guests had turned up. This did not hold them back and they carried on with the ceremony and it took an hour and a half in which people were arriving and had to walk silently to their seats. How embarrassing was it for the guests when they were late and had the assumption the wedding would not start on time?? Think about it and think hard as we are people who need to learn on how to become time conscious in both the working and social environments. Keep well and learn to be time effective and to keep the time you would have set for that day and in future. Gondai Ronald Bangidza 0782413144- whatsapp/mobile rbangidza@gmail
