FRIDAY FOOTBALL FINALS: Dresden saw its 2014 football season come to a close with a 49-14 loss to defending state champion Union City in Round 2 of the Class 1A playoffs. Much like in the teams’ regular season meeting — one UC won 49-13 — the Lions simply could not stop the powerful Tornadoes, who scored every time they had the ball in Friday’s rematch. Mr. Football Back of the Year finalist Ricky Henry ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Alex Reid rushed for three scores to lead the Twisters, who’ve won 24 straight over two seasons. Dresden did pull to within 14-7 on the last play of the first quarter when Dylan Yates bowled his way into the endzone from the two on fourth down. UC scored the next 28 points though, before Quincy McDonald hit Brice Williams for a 23-yard TD with just under eight minutes to play for the Lions’ other score. McDonald finished with 66 yards rushing and another 69 passing, but Dresden totaled just 189 in all compared to 384 for the Tornadoes. Dresden ended its first year under head coach Derek Rang at 6-6 after starting the seasons with three straight losses. Tuesday’s Press sports section will have all the details and much more.
