FRIDAY, November 14 James 1:19-20 Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. It’s amazing to me how quickness and listening have had so little in common for most of my life. I can be quick about a good number of things. I can be quick to lend a hand, quick to speak up, quick to get annoyed, but when it comes to listening, well, the quickness is not as present as I’d like. My inability to listen readily is directly proportionate to my anxiety level. The more anxious I am about something, the less likely I’ll slow down long enough to really listen to my spouse, my children, or my friends. It’s no coincidence that my anger level rises predictably as well. I love how the author of James draws out the connections between being “quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.” It’s so eminently practical and yet deceptively simple. God’s Word to us is often like that: it may seem simple, but the application of it can deeply transform us. Loving one’s enemies comes to mind as just such a thing, much like being quick to listen. - from Forward Day by Day
