FRIDAY, October 24 Luke 10:41-42 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part.” Anyone who has ever given a dinner party will sympathize with Martha. There she is—the stew is bubbling over, the bread is ready to come out of the oven—and her helper has disappeared. She opens the door to find her sister Mary contentedly sitting at the feet of Jesus, their honored guest. No wonder she is annoyed! Added to that, Mary is risking her reputation. It was unheard of for a woman to make herself at home in a room full of strange men. Yet who would want to miss the words of Jesus? Maybe we ought to imitate both of these women. Martha is a real servant leader. If we are like her, we will prepare our house, our inner selves, for Jesus. And if we are like Mary, we’ll follow our hearts to do the one thing needful: listening to him. That will make us vulnerable; it will make us go against the customs of the day. And it will save us!
