FRIEND our site if you enjoy these older Paratrooper / Airborne photos/items. These photos have listed on the item 509th PIR no date or other info listed. This paratrooper is wearing an M2 helmet but what is very interesting to me is the early M1 Carbine. It is an early issue with flip up rear sights and NO bayonet attachment. The carbine has what appears to be an unusual clamp on bayonet. It appears to clamp on the barrel a few inches down and also in front of the front sight. Rod shaped at the rear and flatted at the business end. It is not a T4, T5 or T6 (early one clamp/wing nut British or spike style). The early M1 carbines did not come with a bayonet attachment so this is likely a rare early attempt to attach a type of experimental bayonet to the early issued carbine. It also could be a one-off theater made. Would like to hear any additional factual information on this bayonet if you have any. Photos courtesy of the Ed Hicks Collection (warpathmilitaria).
