If you notice your partner exhibiting jealous behavior, it is probably because they feel threatened by other people. Jealousy can make or break a relationship, but it depends on how you deal with it. Here are some tips on what to do if you’re experiencing jealousy in your relationship: 1. Assess their behavior. Your partner wants what’s best for you and they want to make you happy. Before you berate them for their current behavior, you have to assess the situation. Is their jealousy legitimate, or is it just an irrational overreaction? A lot of people experience jealousy because of something that happened in their past. 2. Talk to them. The first thing you should do is to sit down and talk to them. Do not communicate over email or over the phone. It is best to meet up and talk to them in person. Figure out the motivations for their actions and why they are acting out on their feelings. 3. Set the necessary boundaries. Once you’ve established an understanding of the situation, you have to set boundaries. Your partner may try to control how you spend your time and who you spend it with, for fear that you will be tempted to leave them for someone else. Make sure that they understand that you want to be with them, and let them feel like they trust you. 4. Don’t compare your relationships to the ones in the past. You have to make it clear to your partner that your relationship with them is distinct from other people’s and different from the ones that both of you have had in the past. They may have been hurt or betrayed in the past by a former partner, and are afraid that it will happen again. 5. Talk to a friend Talk to a close confidante about your problems. You may feel more comfortable talking to a friend rather than just your partner. Allowing yourself to open up to someone can make you feel better and shed some perspective on things. 6. Talk to a professional. Other times, it’s best to get a second opinion. Consult a relationship or couples counselor. They are more authorized and experienced to provide you with solid advice and mediate your troubles. 7. Be prepared to lose them. If you have already tried various methods and the jealousy still persists, then you might have to be prepared to lose them. An overly jealous person who refuses to believe what you say and is hesitant to change their ways will not result in a healthy relationship.
