FRIM DG ELECTED NEW ASM FELLOW Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) Director General (DG) Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod, one of the recipients of the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) Award from the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) last year, has been elected as a new fellow to the prestigious academy. He received the certificate last night at the 2014 Conferment of Fellowships to Scientists by ASM and the Announcement of the 2014 Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM), officiated by Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak held in Kuala Lumpur. Dr Abd Latif, who was accompanied by wife Datin Halidah Kasmin, son, Muhammad Ismail, and several FRIM staff to the ceremony, was elected for his expertise in Non-Wood Forest Products (bamboo, rattan, palms, etc.), Properties, Processing and Utilisation, under the Biological Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Discipline. The PM, also the recipient of the Honorary Fellow award, had presented the ASM fellowship certificates to Abd Latif and other scientists. This year, the Academy conferred one Honorary Fellow, two Senior Fellow, 21 New Fellow and 34 TRSM Awards. Also present at the ceremony were Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin; and ASM President, Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali. Dr Abd Latif is the fifth FRIM scientist to be appointed as a fellow to the prestigious academy, following the footsteps of the first FRIM DG, Tan Sri Dr Salleh Mohd Nor; the second FRIM DG, Datuk Dr Abd Razak Mohd Ali; the former FRIM Deputy DG, Dr Francis Ng; and the Biodiversity Division Director, Dr Saw Leng Guan. He is the first FRIM scientist to be accorded the ASM TRSM Award, in recognition of his many years of consistent efforts and contribution in undertaking and mobilising research in the field of forestry.
